We proudly present to you our team of horses

Vachi

Height: 15.3hh

Colour: Bay with white blaze

Sex: Mare

Breed: Thoroughbred x Clydesdale

Vachi is the queen of our herd.  Vachi is Denise’s horse, used for stock work, trekking and the odd Dressage lesson; she joined the team in October 2003. Vachi and Denise have taken part in two Otago Goldfields Cavalcades in 2005 and 2006 and other treks around Otago and Southland. Cara is currently developing Vachi’s jumping confidence. Vachi is used for clients when not away cavalcading but is not a horse for anyone, more suited to those with some experience or a kind relaxed personality suits her, as she is a very kind and sensitive horse.

Racy (Funtime)

Height: 16hh

Colour: Dark Bay

Sex: Gelding

Breed: Thoroughbred

(Racing is Fun x Cheverly)

Racy has been with us since August 1995 and is a great asset to the team.  He was Cara’s Pony Club mount and stock horse for many years, but is now used for clients and pony club riders. Racy is a very versatile horse and has competed successfully in A&P Shows, Gymkhanas, One day horse trials (up to Open PC level), Dressage, Show Jumping, Side-saddle and Western events, with us. Cara achieved her Pony Club B Certificate on Racy.  Racy is a great mount for almost anyone beginner or experienced, good with children.

Pam (Pandora)

Height: 14.1hh

Colour: Bay with

white markings

Sex: Mare

Breed: Clyde x part bred pony

Pam is our great little horse (Pony) with a great big personality. Pam was a new addition to the team Dec 2005 to replace Lani. Pam is great fun for children and small adults and adapts well to riders ability. She has a varied background from some Pony Club to trekking and is a great asset to our team. Pam is very safe but enthusiastic so the timid beginner may feel the need to start on the lead. Great pony to have lessons on whether you are learning to ride or wanting to build confidence after years out of the saddle, she can also jump.

Sam

Height: 17hh

Colour: Black

Sex: Gelding

Breed: Thoroughbred

   (Statutory x Double Flight)

Sam is our gentle giant, lovely gentle sweet natured horse with lots of character. He competed in our local (Owaka Pony Club) gymkhana in 2004.  Sam is a great trekker, can be enjoyed by many, particularly good horse for taller people, teenagers and a great blokes horse.

Tammy (Taramea)

Height: 16hh

Colour: Liver chestnut

   with white markings

Sex: Mare

Breed: Thoroughbred

(Nokomai Station bred,

Sire: Dandyman)

Tammy has been with us since May 1998 and was Heidi’s Pony Club mount and stock horse. She is another very versatile mount who has competed successfully in many equine disciplines again up to open pony club level.  Another great mount for any level rider including children and nervous beginners.

Poppy

Sex: Mare

Breed: Standardbred

New addition October 2005.  Poppy has a kind natured and is sweet little horse with a fantastic walk, but will also trot and canter, when asked. Colour: Liver chestnut with flaxen mane & white markings

Sex: Gelding

Breed:  Stationbred ClydeX

(Beaumount station bred)

Beau is owned by John Burgess and has been a valuable asset to our team. He joined our team October 2005 when John was unable to ride, and may continue living at Te Taunga and be used part time when he’s not away with John.  Beau is an experienced musters hack and trekking horse, he has been on many cavalcades and treks.

Beau suits many riders and is a great steady horse for nervous beginners.

Wez (Wezyabin)

Height: 15.3hh

Colour: Dark Bay/Black

    with small white markings

Sex: Gelding

Breed: Thoroughbred

Wez, more affectionately known as ‘the little weasel’, is king of our herd. Loads of character, keen jumper. He is currently Cara’s top stock horse and ridden by her as the guide horse for his willingness to go first anywhere he is asked, but is equally happy to ride anywhere in the group as Cara moves around to help when needed. Great to lead other horses off. Wez has been with us since May 2004 and has successfully competed in ODHTs & Show jumping.

Debbie

Height: 15.3hh

Colour: Dark Bay

 with white markings

Sex: Mare

Breed: Stationbred ClydeX

(Glenary Station bred)

New addition May 2006, Debs has spent the winter getting used to her team mates and exploring Te Taunga as she took part in mustering sheep and cattle, riding down the beach which was something new for her and going on family rides. Reliable steady horse for the beginner with plenty of getup and go for the more experienced rider. Debs is an example of the New Zealand Stock horse type.

Blue

Height: 16.2hh

Colour: Chestnut with

white markings

Sex: Gelding

Breed: Throughbred

Blue is another 2006 winter addition we are pleased to add to the team. He has had a varied past and is another been there done that horse, with competition history.  Great fun relaxed horse with no-nonsense for those with some experience or confident learner.  Good horse for lessons whether it is first time riding or learning to jump.

 Chico

Height: 16.1hh

Colour: Dapple Grey

Sex: Gelding

Breed: Anglo Arab

(Sire: Ravenscliff Totara)

Chico has been here since April 2005.  He is an extra on the team used as a spare guide horse often ridden by Julie and for clients who want a forward going horse.  He is a fun horse for experienced riders only as he is a younger horse who is still learning and can have lots of energy and enthusiasm.

Our horses have a great life here at Te Taunga living outdoors as they would naturally in the wild, with room to move, trees and hills for shelter and fresh water troughs or creeks.  The majority of our horses are very rarely or never covered so we do not interfere with their natural ability to regulate their own body temperature.  In the winter our horses enjoy some time-out on a 70 acre hill to roam around in their herd as they naturally would in the wild.

We try our best to provide our horses with a stress free life, we believe keeping our horses in a natural environment (as often as possible for domesticated horses) helps them live a happy healthy life free from diseases and viruses that can be common amongst horses that are kept in close confinement, this fits in well with our organic farming system and our belief of working with nature not against it.

Here at Te Taunga we believe we have a good team of horses. They all have plenty of personality and character so there’s sure to be a horse to suit you. They are not follow the leader trail riding horses, they are riding horses, stock horses, Pony Club Mounts and  many have been or still are ribbon winning competition horses so are great all-rounders. Our horses are versatile and get used on the farm as stock horses as well as being used as riding horses for clients on adventure rides and for lessons, some still go to pony club with local children and teenagers, and some still go to the odd competition. We try our best to match riders with a suitable horse. Not every horse will suit every person like people some personalities do clash. The majority of our horses are big but are very placid and gentle with children.
