So we arrange horse rides and activities to suit you! We take pride in being able to offer you a huge range of options with 1000’s of acres to ride over, as we are very privileged to have access over some neighboring properties in addition to Te Taunga. All rides are fully guided to ensure your safety and we can cater for almost anyone from the complete beginner to experienced rider. All horse rides at Te Taunga Adventures are tailored to suit your level of adventure and experience, from relaxed – exhilarating you decide! Not sure chose from one of our regular 1, 2, or 3 hour rides or check out our other activities. Horse riding is a great way to sight see the beautiful rural country side and native forest the Catlins, New Zealand has to offer visitors and locals, get back to nature and come horse riding with us.

ADVENTURE RIDES/TREKS – Booking is advance is strongly recommended!

Are designed with everyone in mind, our horses can be ridden and are not taught to follow one another so experienced riders can go for a ride with the opportunities to trot and canter, with independent an mount.  For the beginners that want more of a trekking experience our horses will naturally follow along as they are social herd animals by nature.  Beginners can sit aboard your trusty stead and enjoy the views or you can learn to ride as we go or have a LESSON. The following is designed to give you an idea of what we offer but is subject to change and your ride will be personalized to suit you/your group.

 

1 hour Wonder

Great Ride for anyone who wants a great experience with spectacular views, whether you are short of time haven’t been in the saddle for a while or simply never ridden, this is a fantastic adventure. Start on flat to rolling terrain then  climb to 150 meters above sea level to ride along a ridgeline with stunning views over the pacific ocean, estuary, rivers, Pounawea, our QEII forest covenant and up the Owaka valley before gradually making your way back to sea level.

  • Suitable for riders with some experience or the adventurous beginner.
  • Warning does include a steep uphill climb not for the faint hearted but very achievable by beginners and children.
  • Great ride at sunset
  • $45 per person

 

Relaxing 1 hour

As above without the steep hill climb, ride varies over flat to rolling terrain, short easy ride.  Good introduction to horse riding.

  • Suitable for families with young children, nervous beginners or the less adventurous
  • Great scenery and views
  • Flexible ride can begin with short lesson
  • $45 per person

 

2 hour Farm ride

Start with 1 hour wonder then head up the hill further with views over the Catlins Lake and surrounding farmland riding past or thru our QEII covenant forest, past our circular sheep yards at 200 meters above sea level which are centrally located on Te Taunga (our farm). From here we see views of Owaka township, our larger 100 acre block of bush, Surat Bay, False Island and Cannibal Bay.

  • Suitable for any riding level
  • This ride is as flexible as you are and can be varied to suit
  • Opportunity for experienced riders to trot and canter or jump natural obstacles
  • Climbing steep hills aboard your trusty mount can be just as exciting as going fast
  • $70 per person

 

3 hour Farm and Forest Ride

Includes 2 hour farm ride with extras see more of Te Taunga.  Ride through our 100 acre native forest following historic tramlines from the logging days while listening to the water flowing down the stony bush covered streams and bell birds singing their songs, very tranquil, relaxing and peaceful ride.

  • Suitable for any level of riding
  • This ride is as flexible as you are and can be varied to suit
  • Opportunity for experienced riders to trot and canter or jump natural obstacles
  • Climbing steep hills aboard your trusty mount can be just as exciting as going fast
  • $90 per person

 

3 hour Airstrip Farm ride

Head for the hills and ride over farmland of varying terrain from the flat, rolling ridges to the steep. This is the ride if you want the ultimate opportunity to view most of our place and stock while learning about our organic farming system and some Catlins history, while listening to the tunes of our birds.  Fantastic views while climbing and descending over the hills to reach our farm airstrip at 300 metres above sea level. From the airstrip you will see views extending north up the coast to the Otago Peninsula,  the Maungatua’s (south west of Dunedin), Lammerlaw and Lammermoor ranges, Blue Mountains and over Kaitangata, Balclutha, Glenomaru, Katea and Owaka valley’s, Catlins Lake and surrounding farmland.  Heading back you will see more stunning views down the coastline looking over Te Taunga, surrounding farmland, Cannibal bay, False Island, Surat bay and Jacks bay.

  • Suitable for riders capable of trotting and cantering comfortably
  • Great ride for those who enjoy the freedom of feeling on top of the world
  • $90 per person
  • For those wanting to do this at a more relaxed pace allow 4 hours $120

3 Hour Farm/Beach Ride

Great ride for those wanting to experience the farm and the beach, starting from base we head up our main hill either following the main track or heading into paddocks, spectacular views over farmland, rivers, Catlins lake, QEII forest covenant, Owaka township and valley. Reaching our circular  sheep yards at approx. 300 metres above sea level you will descend down the other side with more spectaculars views over native forest, farmland, Cannibal Bay, False Island and Surat Bay.  We then hit the flat for a while following a small valley, giving you a chance to hop off and stretch your legs or have a trot and canter. We then head thru the Totara forest and lupin covered sand dunes before arriving on beach. After the beach we have a short scenic road ride before returning to Te Taunga and head along the flats over the ridges and home for a cuppa.  This ride can be ridden either way depends on tide times and weather.

  • Suitable for any level rider
  • Flexible ride can be changed, or ride longer (4 hours $120)

2 hour Beach Ride

Take time to bond with you horse while riding over flat to rolling farmland before arriving at Surat Bay. Enjoy riding on the beach and playing in the surf, experienced riders may wish to have a trot and canter. When times up turn around and head for home either the same way or head up hill as mentioned in 1 hour wonder.

  • Suitable for any riding level
  • Your riding experience gauges how far you are able to go
  • Likely to see Sea-lions
  • Available at low tide
  • $70 per person

 

3 hour Beach Ride

As above with more time to experience our beautiful coastline

  • Beginner riders likely to ride full length of Surat Bay reaching false Island
  • Experienced riders likely to ride Surat Bay and Cannibal Bay and/or False Island
  • Ride back along beach or through sand dune farmland with Totara forests
  • $90 per person

 

 

Full Day (5-6 hrs riding)

Go on why not see it all, great day out whether you want a relaxing day taking in the fresh sea breezes, strolling across country thru farmland to see sheep and cows grazing, hear birds singing in the native forests  or a full on adrenaline action packed ride this is it! This is a combination of the beach, farm, and airstrip rides. With as many breaks as you require morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. This ride is as flexible as you are please let us know what you want. 

  • Many optional extras, Cannibal bay, False Island – decide as you go!
  • You can make this ride a relaxing day out or a high powered adventure
  • Really get to know horse
  • Lunch and refreshment included
  • Minimum 2 people
  • Some prior riding  and reasonable level of fitness recommended for your comfort

We supply safety helmets and help ensure they fit correctly

We supply oilskin riding coats (if required) and have a small selection of suitable footwear available

We brief all riders before departing on rides

All rides are guided by an experienced guide/s

We encourage riders to ask for help if they are unsure or unhappy about anything

We use Stock saddles to give you a safe and secure ride (English saddles available if requested)

All equipment is regularly cleaned and maintained

We do not allow riders to go faster than they are capable, but encourage lessons

if you want learn to go faster in control

We ask that you respect our guides and horses

A reasonable level of fitness is recommended for your own comfort (particularly for longer rides)

Please wear comfortable long pants/trousers and suitable footwear, bring warm clothing as the Catlins weather can be changeable

Water bottles are recommended on longer rides

Please ask as if you are unsure of anything when booking we are here to help

Please note:

  • Horse riding is an adventure sport there is a significant risk factor involved, by participating in any activity run by Te Taunga Adventure you are personally accepting this risk.
  • Horses are herd animals programmed to flee from danger or defend themselves by biting or kicking, please respect our horses and do not provoke them, treat them kindly for your own safety as well as theirs.
  • If you haven’t ridden before or only done a limited amount of riding you can expect to feel a bit sore the next day, a reasonable level of fitness is recommended for your own comfort.
  • Please for your own sake and that of the horses we do not recommend you book a long ride if you haven’t ridden and are not fit. WE WANT YOU to enjoy your riding at Te Taunga Adventures, and take away happy memories not aches and pains.
  • We do recommend getting off and stretching you legs during rides so comfortable walking boots/ shoes are recommended as are long comfortable pants.

Other activities

The Following is a guide to the selection of other activities we offer as above these activities are tailored to suit your specific requirements.  We welcome your enquiries and ideas on any other activity.  

 

CHILDRENS RIDES 

Led pony rides for young children that are not confident enough or too young to ride out in the open. Great way to introduce the children to horses and ponies or fun activity for a birthday party or special occasion. Children are led around flat paddock; many children may take turns or go for a short trek.

Note: we do use horses as well as ponies for this activity.

  • Great idea for  birthday parties
  • $25/30mins per horse

 

TEAM GAMES AND CONFIDENCE BUILDING

An activity designed for groups small or large.  No experience needed.  Great for building confidence, both in your team and around large animals. Great for corporate groups, school groups, sports teams, social clubs, youth groups, families and anyone that wants a bit of fun while working together as a team to achieve a common goal.  You will work in teams with 1 horse per team and complete several tasks from bending round poles to obstacle courses.  Again this is an activity that is tailored to suit your group’s requirements; it can be simple and easy for beginners to more technical for experienced. These activities can be done for fun or for competitive we can award points for achieving tasks to pick a winning team.  $POA

 

LESSONS

Can be as an individual or in a group and like our rides are designed to suit you.  We can teach the  basic riding skills needed to gain the confidence needed to ride in the open, teach you more advanced skills like dressage and jumping, Horsemanship.  We can teach you out on a ride but by having a lesson you can focus your riding skills that need improvement while being in the safety of a confined space.  If you are a first time beginner you will learn the basics and can leave feeling you are able to ride a horse as opposed to just being a passenger on top. Please ask us if you have any specific requirements.  $50/hour (group discounts may apply)

 

 

STOCK WORK/MUSTERING

This is your chance to experience real kiwi farm life as you join us on a muster or shifting stock either sheep and/or cattle. Only available when we have stock work to do as we do not chase our stock unnecessarily.

We only offer this to experienced riders who are confident and can control a horse on their own.

Never ridden and want to have a go then have a lesson and go on a ride with us first.  $POA

Safety at Te Taunga Adventures

 

Mission Statement

To give people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to enjoy the experience of horse riding while viewing the Catlins and farm scenery in a safe enjoyable environment, with a personal and relaxed kiwi farm atmosphere while operating in a professional business manner.

 

Your safety while at Te Taunga Adventures is taken seriously and is very important to us but as with any adventure sport/activity there is a certain amount of risk involved. Any person taking part in any activity run by Te Taunga Adventures does so at their own personal risk.  Any participant under the age of 16 taking part does so at their parents/guardians responsibility as well as their own risk and must have parental permission.  You will be asked to sign an indemnity.

While horse riding at Te Taunga Adventures it is important to remember:

  • You are taking part in an adventure sport which involves a significant element of risk
  • Your guide/s will do their best to help reduce these risks but they do not have full control of all risks
  • Your guide/s are there to help ensure your ride is an enjoyable adventure please ask if you need help
  • Horses are herd animals – their natural ‘Flight’ instinct tells them to flee from predators, if they cannot escape a threat their defense is to kick or bite (please remember this)
  • The safety of our horses is just as important to us as is yours please respect them, they are our friends, companions, work mates and livelihood we do not want to see them mistreated.
  • Our farm is our livelihood, we are proud of it, we ask you to respect it, please do not drop any litter
  • The Catlins weather is very changeable  please make sure you have sufficient warm clothing
