Cara’s experience with horses began long before she was born with her parents who have both been involved with horses.

Cara’s riding experience began as a very young child when she could often be seen sitting on a horse.  Cara grew up on Te Taunga around horses so knows the farm well and horses have become second nature to her.  At about 10 years of age Cara began attending the Owaka Pony Club where she developed her riding ability and horsemanship knowledge. She gained Pony Club certificates on the way up to her ‘B’ qualification, which is the highest combined practical riding, theory and horsemanship national certificate.  Cara and another pony club member in Owaka were the first in the Owaka Pony Club history to gain this level of qualification.  During this time with Pony Club, Cara became very involved with competing at several competitions from Pony Club Gymkhanas to Agricultural &Pastoral shows and Equestrian Federation One Day Horse trials.

You can be confident you will enjoy your ride with Cara, as she is passionate about what she does and can relate well to people of all ages and backgrounds.  Te Taunga Adventures was developed from her love of the outdoors, the Catlins area and strong interest in organic farming.  This is emphasized every time she travels, lives and works away from home. Studying outdoor adventure recreation activities including leadership and group management skills has given Cara a solid platform to run Te Taunga Adventures.

Cara spent time guiding and teaching at Black Mountain Hideaway Equestrian Centre in Australia. Her experience working with disabled and children further adds to the diversity provided by both her horses and herself.  Cara enjoys sharing her piece of paradise with you.

Denise, Cara’s mother often helps out with tacking up and guides when needed. Denise has also had a life filled with horse experience growing up in Northern Southland with 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Her father bred horses and ponies and the whole family would travel throughout Otago and Southland competing in shows and hunting.

Denise started competing again when her children Cara, Heidi and Ben began competing. She now enjoys riding her horse for pleasure, cavalcading and stock work. Denise has competed in the Equestrian events at the New Zealand Masters Games several times now winning many medals.

Julie Morris is another trusted guide who works with us part-time. Like Cara Julie grew up in the Catlins area and attended Pony Club regularly and competed in many equine disciplines. Julie knows our horses well and has been riding them since selling her own pony, on leaving the area to attend school in Dunedin. Julie has competed successfully both on her own ponies and Racy.  Julie is a pleasure to have around at Te Taunga as her friendly relaxed personality always puts horses and riders at ease.
